Can I paddle anywhere?
In the UK, you need a license to paddle in most of the waterways,
rivers, lakes, etc.
BCU membership (Canoe England, Canoe Wales, Scotland Canoe Association
and the Canoe Association of Northern Ireland) includes a licence
to paddle on 5000km of Britain's waterways and canals.
Not all inland water is open to canoeists, some are privately owned
or is bounded by land which is private, so do check beforehand.
See Useful Web sites page.
In other countries, do check with your national kayak organisations
and waterway / off-shore agencies etc.

/ kayak camping and caravanning
..... you may be one who loves to
go camping with tents, caravans or motorhomes but wondered
about being able to bring
a practical boat of some sort along .
You do not want to be lumbered with a hard shell plastic
/ glass fibre type of
canoe / kayak
you cannot put the boat on the roof or inflatables are too
clumsy, sluggish and are not good for long distance paddling
or for storing much kit....
like light camping with a tent and want to paddle a distance down a river or
down the coastline over a weekend, but do not have the space at home to store
a normal sized canoe or kayak.....
.... or you are thinking of taking up canoe camping but
is not sure of what boat to get ....
Folding kayaks is an excellent solution! These types of
skin-on-frame foldable kayaks are guaranteed to add enjoyment
to your camping and caravan
Folding kayaks have either a wooden or aluminum frame and
a skin made of marine grade canvas for the deck and tough
hypalon (or CSM, TPU, PVC) for the hull.
The boats pack into bags no longer than 1.5m.
The packing bags can be easily stored in the back of the car, or in the
storage space in a motor home / caravan. The bags can also be put on
FOLDY kayak carts and be easily taken on trains too.
type of folding kayaks are renowned for having large internal storage
spaces, so for that extended camping trip you can pack quite a
stow anything on top of the decks. Folding
kayaks do have a lot more internal storage space compared to inflatable
kayaks, plastic touring kayaks and glass fibre sea kayaks. The cockpits
larger so it is very easy to get in and out of the boat.
Depending on the model, the total packed weight of the kayak range between
25kg to 40kg, from a single seater to a family sized 4-5 seater.
Average assembly time is 15-20 minutes, but with practice,
you can easily assemble much quicker. No tools is required - the wooden
frame pieces are 'cliplocked' together.
If you are into wild camping, camouflage kayak skirts
to hide your kayak are available! See Camo covers
Before going on a short or long trip, do check River or Waterway Access
rights. Are you allowed to paddle where you want to go?
rivers in the UK that are not navigatable, so if you are not sure, talk
to local clubs or you can try contacting the BCU who can provide information
waterways and river access. See Useful Websites page.
There are also some useful books and maps available that specifically cover
you can paddle and camp. See Books page. The Canoe
Camping Club, a special interest section of the UK's Camping and Caravanning
Club is also a good place to start.
