Can I paddle anywhere?
In the UK, you need a license to paddle in most of the waterways,
rivers, lakes, etc.
BCU membership (Canoe England, Canoe Wales, Scotland Canoe Association
and the Canoe Association of Northern Ireland) includes a licence
to paddle on 5000km of Britain's waterways and canals.
Not all inland water is open to canoeists, some are privately owned
or is bounded by land which is private, so do check beforehand.
See Useful Web sites page.
In other countries, do check with your national kayak organisations
and waterway / off-shore agencies etc.

Mk II Formoza 550XL COMBAT
Mk II Formoza 550XL Quattro COMBAT
NATO designation "Wayland
Mk II 550 - NSN 1940-43-001-7175")
II Formoza 600XXL Quattro COMBAT
version is an 'Expedition' variant of the older COMMANDO
version. In addition to most of
the normal features of the COMMANDO version, the COMBAT
comes with removable front side pannier bags, removable front
guards, a central net platform (between front and rear
paddler) and longer deck belts fitted with multiple D-rings.
Elastic front / rear cargo nets as seen on the Commando version
COMBAT but can be supplied on request (or easily self made).
The front/side pannier bags allows for ready access by the front
paddler to essential kit whilst seated. The high removable splash
guards are for paddling through surf (out going and in coming).
net platform is
made with strapping, which acts as a tight floor for heavy kit to
be placed on top preventing the sagging of the spray deck cover.
pannier bags, high washboards, and central net platform are all
removable - they do not need to be attached if not required.
The continuous bow to stern deck belts have numerous D-rings.
The advantage of the D-rings is that kit that comes with attachment
to be secured under a cargo net - EG rucksacks, backpacks, bergans,
so that those items can be easily opened etc while still secured
to the decks. Elastic bungy type nets (not supplied as standard)
can still be used.
There are are a few deck variants that you can choose - the front
deck is standard central anchor / accessory holder,
and paddle pockets
while the rear deck differs depending on needs (optional). The
standard rear deck is plain, with a rear hatch or rear
paddle pockets / holders available as optional extra. The boat
has a double bow to stern cord and elastic deck-lines (life-lines),
usually have side paddle holders (toggles) next to the rear paddler.
